†Ajax have lost their past three Champions League matches against Liverpool. They have only been beaten four or more times in a row by two teams in the European Cup/Champions League: Juventus (four, 1997-2004) and Real Madrid (seven, 2010-2019). The Reds won their last game at Ajax 1-0 in October 2020. Their only other visit saw them lose 5-1 in the European Cup in December 1966. This will be Liverpool’s 150th Champions League match, making them the 10th club to reach that landmark.
Of that 150, 62 will have been under Jurgen Klopp, moving the German level with Rafael Benitez. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has scored 41 Champions League goals, three short of former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba's 44, which is the most by an African player in the competition. Salah has scored five goals in his past three Champions League games, and could score in four straight appearances in the competition for just a second time (previously doing so in the 2020-21 season).
The German manager pointed to the club’s injury record several times but added: “Do I expect us to play better consistently? Yes. â€In referencing Ajax’s recent form – which features three wins in their last eight games in all competitions - Klopp said: “They are a really good team. They are in transition. Can you ever remember a moment where transition was quick enough for the outside world? I don’t think it has ever happened. â€Asked if he feels Liverpool are closer to clicking as a team than some think, Klopp said: “You need consistency in a line-up and we can’t do that.
But their league form has been patchy this season – leaving them eighth – and they have one win in seven away matches in all competitions. Injuries to key names such as Thiago, Diogo Jota, Joel Matip and Luis Diaz have done little to help the cause. “You need consistency in a line-up and we can’t do that, " Klopp said. "That means the players who don’t have injuries play too often and the ones with injuries come back and play too early. Then they come back and have another injury.
There have been points where we’ve looked an absolute shell of a team this season. This result and performance has convinced me we have what it takes to make a good effort to stay up. It’s definitely not a given and there are some hard yards ahead but… BELIEVE! Liverpool fansBen: Title challenge is over. Last season's team have disappeared. It's the same as it was in 2020-21 where we had loads of players injured and no strength in depth to replace them. Dave: This game exposed the lack of quality depth we have in the squad. Forest showed fight and too many Liverpool players were happy to play safe passes with no urgency.
A very lethargic performance lacking fight and desire to win. Andy: Another display showing a lack of cutting edge in front of goal and vulnerabilities at the back - both trademarks of a disappointing season so far. Chris: We looked like a disjointed team that has been patched together. Let's be honest, how can we function with so many injuries to the backbone of the team? Fabinho, one of the lynchpins of Jurgen Klopp's Champions League and Premier League-winning sides, is a shadow of his former self. He never relied on pace, but he's now even more static and opponents simply run past him at will, with and without the ball. Jordan Henderson came on in the second half, but he lacks a creative spark when defences are sitting deep and failed to energise his team into an undeserved comeback. Naby Keita provides guile and is good in the transition phase, but he hasn't played a minute all season and relying on him to get fit and stay fit would be a waste of time. It is imperative Klopp enters the transfer market in January.
